Prices of US foods, led by meat, have risen again

According to the latest food consumer price index released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, US food prices rose 4.5% in September, the sixth consecutive month of rising.

The agency pointed out that after rising 3% and 2.6% in August and July respectively, the two-year interest rate for spot food prices in the United States was 8.8% higher than in 2019. This surge also marks the fastest growth level since March 2009.

As in other recent reports, the increase in the cost of cooking at home is mainly due to the increase in meat and poultry prices. Meat prices rose by 12.6% and poultry prices rose by 6.1%, leading to an overall increase in the prices of meat, poultry, fish and eggs. 10.5%.

According to an analysis by JPMorgan Chase, the index has risen year by year in the past 10 months, and almost all packaged food companies have announced to increase their prices in September.

The government stated that for the first time since June 2020, food price inflation for home-cooked food exceeds the cost of food (including restaurants, casual dining and fast food) that are eaten out.
