Bird flu has hit South Africa, where egg prices have soared

South Africa is in the midst of a severe shortage of eggs and chicken amid an ongoing outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza. According to the South African Poultry Association (SAPA), five million birds have been culled in South Africa so far this year, and the culling of birds for waster  rendering  plant accounts for 20% of the country’s total number of commercial laying hens, leading to a sharp rise in poultry product prices. The Pietermaritzburg Organisation for Economic Justice and Dignity (PMBEJD) food basket data shows that between September and October this year alone, egg prices in South Africa increased by 20 per cent month-on-month and 36 per cent year-on-year.
