Jane Rumble, head of the Polar Regions division of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, said on the same day that if the bird flu epidemic spreads to the Antarctic continent, Antarctic penguins may face the risk of mass extinction.In an interview, Mr Rumble warned that the virus, which has killed millions of birds around the world over the past year, would be deadly if it reached the Antarctic. Rumble did not specify how many birds would be threatened, but said the death toll would be significant given penguins’ tendency to live in tight groups.
