An outbreak of bird flu in Russia has infected about 290,000 birds

According to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), the Russian Ministry of Agriculture has reported to WOAH an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in Russia.
The outbreak is in Aniva District of Sakhalin Oblast and was confirmed on 8 February 2024. The source of the outbreak is unknown or uncertain. Laboratory tests found that 294,478 birds were suspected to be infected, of which 107,082 became ill and died, and 187,396 were killed and disposed of harmfully.
