About 27,000 birds have been culled in India’s bird flu outbreak
According to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), on 25 February 2022, the Ministry of Fisheries, Livestock and Dairy of India notified OIE of an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in India.
The outbreak occurred in Palghar and Tana districts of Maharashtra and was confirmed on 16 February 2022. The source of the outbreak is unknown or uncertain. Laboratory tests found that 28,308 birds were suspected of being infected, of which 1,376 fell ill and died, and 26,932 were killed or disposed of.
